Biographical Text
Professor Emeritus of Psychology George Randolph Wesley (July 31, 1931—) was born in Houston, Texas. He attended Jones County Junior College (MS), majoring in chemistry, and received an A.A. in 1950. He majored in chemistry at the University of Mississippi (1950-52) and, later, received a B.A. in psychology (1958) from the University of Houston (TX). He received a M.A. in counseling and guidance from the University of Denver (1959), and he received a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Denver in 1965. Professor Wesley joined the faculty of Appalachian State University in 1963. Prior to coming to Appalachian State, he was an assistant professor of psychology at Memorial University of Newfoundland (1966-67) and an instructor at Northeastern Jr. College (CO) from 1961-63. He served as Visiting Professor at the University of Maine at Fort Kent (ME) during the summers of 1970 and 1971 and at the University of New Brunswick during the summer of 1974. In addition, he has taught in an extension capacity at Wilkes Community College (NC), the University of Virginia, both in Abingdon and in Roanoke, and Cleveland Tech in Shelby, NC. He was tenured at Appalachian State University in 1971. Dr. Wesley's professional affiliations have included membership in Beta Beta Beta, Gamma Sigma Epsilon, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Epsilon Delta, NCPA, NCAE, NAE, AAUP, and NCPA. While at Appalachian State, he served on the General Sources: Appalachian State University files. Theoretical Psychology Administrative Committee and the Psychology Library Committee. His publications include A History of Hysteria; Spare the Rod; Some Informal Diagnostic Aids on ED, LD, and MR ; The Psychology of Adjustment', Willingness to Risk; Behavior Therapy: A Critique; Autumn Melody, A Primer of Misbehavior, Educational Psychology Revisited', and The U.S. of A. and Other Writings. Other works include Letters to My Shrink, with B.E. Sweatt, Jr., and Pigmy in the Mist, with T.C. Joyner. Dr. Wesley retired from Appalachian State University in December of 1993. In June, 1994, he received the rank of Professor Emeritus of Psychology. He resides in Boone, NC. -Ms. Bonnie Van Vlymen
