Professor Emeritus of Biology Francis Angelo Montaldi (September 8,1928- was born in Buffalo, NY, the fifth of seven children whose father and maternal grandparents had emigrated from Italy near the turn of the century. He received an A.A. from Manatee Junior College (1958-1960) and graduated cum laude with a B .S. from Appalachian State University (1960-1962), where he was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society. He earned an M.A. in biology at Appalachian in 1963. He attended the University of Georgia (1966-70) on a NSF Fellowship and was awarded an Ed.D. in microbiology/ science education. Montaldi was a biology instructor at Mars Hill College (NC) during 1963-1966 before being appointed to the faculty of Appalachian State University in 1970. Earlier, he had taught science at the junior high level, and was self-employed as a land developer (1956-1958). Prior to that, he was in the general agriculture field before serving in the U.S. Army (1954-1956) as a heavy equipment operator and personnel records specialist. Dr. Montaldi has been professionally affiliated with the Southeastern Electron Microscopy Society, the American Society for Microbiology, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has conducted extensive research on bacterial species of the genus Bacillus, has held workshops in medical microbiology, given seminars on differential media in diagnostic microbiology, and was a participant in validation studies of ETS. While at Appalachian, Dr. Montaldi chaired the departmental budget committee. the departmental graduate committee, and participated as a values discussant (Braxton Harris Symposium). He acted as interim department chairman, was vice-chair and the chair of the graduate faculty, a member of the faculty senate, and secretary of the Appalachian Regional Electron Microscopy Society. Professor Montaldi retired in 1994 and received professor emeritus rank at that time. Dr. Montaldi and his wife, Barbara Ann, the assistant manager of the Appalachian State University textbook department, have three grown sons: Daniel F. Montaldi (August 11, 1954-), a college professor; Stephen H. Montaldi (October 15, 1955), a doctor (internal medicine); and Peter A. Montaldi (July 12, 1964), an information systems specialist. Retirement finds Dr. Montaldi enjoying family activities, restoring old Ford vehicles, and indulging in his interest in agri- 192 cultural equipment and biographies. He continues to pursue professional interests in water and wastewater microbiology and watershed maintenance, and is a consultant at the local level on related matters.
