Professor Emeritus of Economics John Hibbs Brashear was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1916 where he was graduated from South High School in 1934. After attending the University of Florida at Gainesville for two years, he worked at the City Trust and Savings Bank in Youngstown. During this time he completed a course of study at the American Institute of Banking in Youngstown. Professor Brashear joined the United States Army in 1942 and served in the field artillery in the European theatre. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. After leaving the service, Professor Brashear resumed his studies at the University of Florida, where he was elected to membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, an honorary scholastic fraternity. He was also a member of Delta Chi, a social fraternity . He received the B.A . degree in business administration in 1948 and his M.A . in 1950. In 1951 Professor Brashear joined the Economics Department of Elon College! North Carolina, where he chaired the Department for five years. In the summer of 1955 he was awarded a faculty research grant at Duke University. In 1956 he became a member of the faculty of the Department of Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he continued his academic studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1967 he became a member of the Economics Department at Appalachian State University, from which he retired Professor Emeritus in 1980. Professor Brashear was a member of American Association of University Professors, Southern Economics Association, Southern Finance Association, and North Carolina Education Association . He was active on the Appalachian campus as chairman of the Faculty Senate and chairman of the College of Business Building Committee. He also served on the Faculty Staff Fringe Benefit Committee, Faculty Welfare and Morale Committee, Campus-Wide and Public Programs Committee Academic Policies and Procedures Committee, All-University Faculty Welfare Committee! and University Committee on Business Affairs. His publications include the following : "Economic Theory Reflected in George Lillo's London Merchant," Faculty Publications, 66 (1969), 49-53. "Peak Load Pricing of Electricity," Appalachian Business Review, 4 (1977), 11-14. He is married t o Lucy Moore Brashear, Professor Emerita from Appalachian State University.
