Professor Emeritus of Psychology Fred Allen Wilson (February 3, 1936-) was born in Verona, Mississippi, and graduated from Thayer High School, Thayer, Missouri, in 1954. After attending Paducah Junior College, Paducah, Kentucky, and Murray State College, Murray, Kentucky, Wilson entered the University of Mississippi, studying there until June 1958. From 1958 until 1960, he served in the United States Army in Germany. Wilson was in charge of his unit's intelligence material and was also an instructor of rehabilitation classes for court martial recipients. After his tour of duty, he reentered the University of Mississippi, from which he earned both a B.A.E. degree in English, with a minor in social studies (1961), and an M.Ed, degree in guidance and counseling (1963). He received his Ed.D. degree in educational psychology and guidance from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1972. He is also certified as a school psychologist, Level III, and as a school counselor and English teacher. Wilson began his teaching career in 1957 at Ballard Memorial High School, Barlow, Kentucky, where he taught general science and biology. After teaching English and social studies in the Vicksburg Public Schools, Vicksburg, Mississippi, from June 1961 until June 1963, he was then employed as a counselor/teacher at Wilmot Public Schools, Wilmot, Arkansas, where he taught from January 1964 until August 1970. Dr. Wilson's duties at Wilmot included counseling, teaching two classes each year in English and/or social studies, assisting in developing plans for integrating a school district having an eighty percent black population, and testing and counseling special education students and parents in establishing remedial educational programs. In the winter of 1972, he taught a graduate extension course in the Educational Psychology and Guidance Department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 1972, Dr. Wilson joined the faculty at Appalachian State University as an assistant professor of psychology. While at Appalachian State he conducted a number of workshops and was involved in various research projects. Wilson was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, American Personnel and Guidance Association-Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, North Carolina Association of Educators, National Education Association, and the Southern Association of Counselor Education and Supervision. Dr. Wilson retired after thirty years of service to Appalachian State University. He was awarded emeritus status by the Board of Trustees in June 2002.
