Associate Professor Emerita of Home Economics Joyce Peterson Stines (February 14, 1929-) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (1948-50) and received her B.S.E. degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Stines then entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, working toward a master's degree in religious education. In 1966 she received her M.Ed, degree, with a major in special education, from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She went on to earn fifty-six credit hours toward a Ph.D. degree in child development at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (1978-85). Stines was appointed to Appalachian State University as assistant professor of home economics and director of the Lucy Brock Child Development Center in 1968. Prior to her appointment at Appalachian, she was the director of the nursery school at Campbell College, Buies Creek, North Carolina (1967-68), and also taught in the college's Department of Education (1966-67). During the summers of 1963-64, she was a kindergarten teacher at Duke Memorial Day School in Durham. Stines also has taught in the Broadway Baptist Kindergarten (Kentucky); in the San Diego County, California, schools (music and kindergarten); and she was the assistant director of the First Baptist Church Preschool in El Dorado, Arkansas. Stines' professional affiliations include the National Association on Education of Young Children; the Council on Young Children; Children's 100; the North Carolina Association of Children Under Six, of which she was president in 1970; the Watauga Family Life Council; and the North Carolina Family Life Council, of which she also served as president. During her tenure at Appalachian State, Stines worked on the National Council on Family Relations, the Southeastern Regional Council on Family Relations, the Teacher Education Council, the Faculty Senate (chair of the Ethics Committee), the Department of Fine and Applied Arts Re-Admissions Committee, the committee to select the outstanding faculty for the College of Fine and Applied Arts, the Publications Committee (North Carolina Family Life Council), and several departmental committees. In addition, Stines was the vice president and program chair of the Watauga Family Life Council, and she was a consultant at the Phillips Day Care Council, Inc. She was published in the November issue (1976) of Forum. In 1992, the Observation Room in the Lucy Brock Child Development Center, which had been renovated through contributions from students, faculty, and parents of children formerly enrolled in the center, was dedicated to Stines in a celebration party. She retired from Appalachian State in 1994, and the rank of associate professor emerita was awarded her at that time. Professor Stines and her husband, James, reside in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
