Biographical Text
Professor Emeritus of Geology Loren A. Raymond received his A.A. degree from Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, California in 1963. He attended Sacramento State College in Sacramento, California for one year before enrolling at San Jose State College in San Jose, California where he received both his B.S. (1967) and M.S. degrees (1969) in geology. In 1973 Raymond earned his Ph.D. in geology from the University of California, Davis. Prior to coming to Appalachian State University, Raymond worked as a teaching assistant both at San Jose State College and the University of California, Davis. He also worked as an assistant professor at Southern Oregon State College. Raymond's teaching career spanned more than 35 years with the majority of those years were spent at ASU where he began as an assistant professor in 1977 and rose to full professor in 1982. Raymond served in a variety of capacities while at ASU including both acting chairperson and chairperson of the Department of Geology and chair of the University Council of Chairs. Raymond's research projects garnered in excess of $125,000 in grants and funding for geological studies. He has also published more than 130 articles, papers, and books. Throughout his career, Raymond has received many honors for his numerous achievements including being named Superior Professor at ASU in 2001, Teacher of the Year for the College of Arts and Sciences in 1989, a charter member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, College of Arts and Sciences in 1990, and a nominee for the Outstanding Teacher Award from the ASU Student Government Association in 1995 and 1996. Raymond holds memberships in such professional organizations as the American Geophysical Union, the Association of Geoscientists for International Development, Carolina Geological Society, Geological Society of America, Mineralogical Society of America, Ecumenical Project for International Cooperation, Society Economic Paleontologists & Mineralogists, Pacific Section, Southern Appalachian Geological Association, Phi Kappa Phi, and Society of Sigma Xi. Raymond, a licensed geologist, retired from Appalachian, but he continues to work as a consultant on various projects for organizations, agencies, and companies such as NASA, Carolina Heart Institute, Feldspar Corporation, INTERTECT and Tweetsie Railroad.
