Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences Howard William (Bill) Paul (November 6, 1932-) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Margaret Dormant and Howard C. Paul. Bill has four brothers. He earned his A.B. degree from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, in 1954; his M.A. degree in mathematics from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, in 1966; and his Ph.D. degree in mathematics education from Ohio State University, Columbus, in 1970. Additionally, he studied at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, and Baldwin Wallace College, Berea, Ohio. Paul married Norma E. Schott on June 4, 1955, in Columbus, Ohio. Norma is the daughter of Ruth Gantz and Otho Schott, and she has one brother and one sister. Dr. and Mrs. Paul have two children, Renee and Penny. Renee (December 3, 1957-) earned her forestry degree from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina; she married Timothy Clontz in 1982, and the couple has three children: Megan (1987-), Tyler (1989-), and Matthew (1991-). Penny (March 14, I960-) earned her degrees in nutrition from Appalachian State University and Virginia Tech. She married Gregory Hite in 1989, and the couple's two children are April (1989-) and Andy (1991-). Dr. Paul began teaching mathematics (grades seven through twelve) in 1954 in Jacksontown, Ohio, where he also coached football and basketball. He moved to Elyria, Ohio, in 1957 to chair a college-level department of mathematics. In 1967, he moved to Ohio State University, where he taught mathematics full-time and completed a Ph.D degree. Dr. Paul came to Appalachian State University in 1970 as an assistant professor of mathematics. He served on numerous committees, including the Teacher Education Council and the Faculty Senate. He received the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1972. Paul was appointed chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences in 1980 and served until 1992; he retired in 1995. Dr. Paul has been a member of the Mathematical Association of America since 1967. He was also a charter member (1970) of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and was involved in several activities: he served as president in 1979 to 1981, was on the board of directors from 1978 until his retirement, and was a speaker or workshop leader annually at meetings. He also edited the journal Centroid from 1982 to 1984. Dr. Paul and his wife have lived in Sugar Grove, North Carolina, since 1972. Paul enjoys gardening; he grows vegetables and flowers and especially likes working with roses and irises. He raises grapes, blueberries, apples, peaches, plums, and a few Christmas trees for personal use. Dr. Paul also enjoys fishing, and most of all, he enjoys being a grandpa.
