Biographical Text
Professor Emerita of English Mary Rowena Moore (January 25, 1920-) was born in Union City, Michigan. From 1937 to 1941, she attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, where she earned a B.S. degree in history and in English. Moore continued her education at Indiana University in 1947, receiving a M.S. degree in counseling and comparative literature in 1948. Returning to Indiana University in 1955, she completed an Ed.D. degree in counseling and comparative literature in 1957. Dr. Moore's postgraduate studies include one academic year (1963-64) at Cambridge University in England, where she studied English literature. In the summer of 1964 she also attended London University of England. Moore studied at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1970. She returned to England in 1971, this time to Stratford-on-Avon to study at the Shakespeare Institute. She studied in Greece during the summer of 1973 and with two Vergilian study tours, one in Italy in the summer of 1976 and another in Greece in 1980. Before joining the faculty of Appalachian State University, Moore gained experience as residence hall director (1948-51), counselor of students (1951-55), dean of women (1957-62), assistant professor of English (1962-65), and associate professor of English (1965-67). She came to Appalachian State in 1967 as associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1970. Moore was awarded professor emerita status in English on December 1, 1989. Moore was professionally affiliated with the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, the Victorian Society, the Vergilian Society, the Southern Comparative Literature Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Her professional publications include "A Validity Check," which appeared in Personnel and Guidance Journal, 1960, and "Two Interview Techniques," published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1960. Dr. Moore has remained an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 1955. She was awarded three scholarships-one in New York and two in England. She is also an active member of the Daniel Boone Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and Watauga County Friends of the Library. Moore lives in Boone, North Carolina.
