Biographical Text
Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences Arnold David McEntire (June 18, 1934-) was born in Old Fort, North Carolina. He attended North Carolina State University (1951-53) prior to attending Appalachian State University, from which he received a B.S. degree in mathematics in 1960. McEntire earned an M.A. degree in mathematics, also from Appalachian State, in 1962. He was then a doctoral candidate at the University of Florida (1965-66), accumulating fifty-one credit hours. McEntire served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958 as a navigator and intelligence officer. Following his Air Force duty, he taught high school mathematics in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from 1960 to 1961. McEntire was a research assistant at Appalachian State University in the 1961-62 academic year, and he became a faculty member in 1962. He was tenured in 1967. McEntire has been a member of the Mathematical Association of America, the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He was also a charter member of a special interest group, in ACM, on computer science education and a member of the subcommittee of the North Carolina Computer Usage Council (computer science section). Elected by students as one of five best teachers at Appalachian State University during his tenure, McEntire was listed in Outstanding Educators of America in 1972. He has authored several publications, including Elementary Mathematics, A Logical Approach (2nd edition, 1969); the textbook Structured Fortran Programming (Center for Instructional Development, 1977); "A New Focus for Educational Improvement Through Cognitive and Other Structuring of Subconscious Personal Axioms," with Anita Narvarte Kitchens (Education, 1984); and various learning situation booklets on computer concepts for elementary and high school levels (published under the IMS program). McEntire and his wife, Dorothy, a retired nurse, have two sons, Robert Bryan (I960-) and Jeffrey Alan (1962-). Robert is a counselor in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Jeff is the Information Technology Director for Biscuitville Corporation, headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina. The McEntires also have three grandchildren. One is Jeff's daughter, Meredith, and the others are Robert's sons, Bryan and Benjamin. Professor McEntire retired from Appalachian State in 1992 and received emeritus rank in 1993. He is no longer involved in business or real estate work. He is active in golf, in Senior Center woodworking, and personal development studies in Morganton, North Carolina, where he and his wife now make their home.
