Professor Emerita of Home Economics Charlotte L. McCall (February 1, 1929-) was born in Rebecca, Georgia. She earned her B.S.H.E. degree from the University of Georgia, Athens, in 1949 and her M.S. degree in guidance from Barry College, Miami Shores, Florida, in 1962. In 1973, McCall earned her Ed.D. degree from Pennsylvania State University, University Park. Additional course study was undertaken at Georgia State University, Atlanta, and the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. Dr. McCall taught high school and adult home economics at Manchester High School, Manchester, Georgia, from 1949 to 1950; at Hoke Smith High School, Atlanta, Georgia, from 1951 to 1956; and at Westview Junior High School, Miami, Florida, from 1956 to 1967. She worked as a research assistant for the board of education in Dade County, Florida, from 1967 to 1968, doing special assignments and studying behavioral objectives and home economics in the Department of Research, Development, and Evaluation. In 1969, McCall returned to teaching at Miami Central High School, Miami, Florida, teaching home economics and supervising student teachers. From 1971 to 1972, Dr. McCall was involved in the C.O.P.E. Center, located in Dade County, Florida, teaching high school home economics for pregnant girls. She was then appointed to the faculty of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, as an instructor in vocational home economics education. In 1980, McCall was appointed to the faculty of Appalachian State University as an associate professor in the Department of Home Economics. She received tenure status in 1985. Professor McCall has published a long list of writings. Some of those include: • "Incorporating Leadership Into Undergraduate Home Economics Education: A Conceptive Framework and Resources." (With Charlotte Farris, Cornell University, and Letty Pryor, University of North Carolina at Greensboro: Home Economics Center for Research, 1979) • "TOCK: Strengthening Consumer Education," Illinois Teacher 18.2 (1974). • "Illinois Test of Consumer Knowledge" (ITOCK), noted in A Comparative Assessment of Secondary Consumer and Homemaking Education Programs. Illinois Office of Education, 1975. • Written presentation in the Florida Federation of Women's Club Search for the Outstanding Teacher of the Year, for which she won first place (1963-64). • "The Watauga County Vocational Needs Assessment Survey," sponsored by the Watauga County Board of Education; presented to the board, February, 1984. Her research efforts have included a five-year follow-up study of occupational home economics terminees; sex bias encountered by occupational home economics terminees; and of sex attitudes/ biases of vocational teachers and administrators in Alabama. She also developed a model for reducing/ eliminating sex bias in vocational education and a test for assessing competency in consumer education. Dr. McCall's professional affiliations have included lifetime membership in the American Home Economics Association, in which she served as chair-elect (teacher education section, 1980), district chair (Anniversary Fund Drive), and member of the Steering Committee for Sex Equity (1978-80); life membership in the Florida Home Economics Association, in which she served as chair of the Finance Committee (1966) and the Legislative Committee (1967) and was the elected delegate to the national conventions in 1965 and 1967; life membership in the Alabama Home Economics Association, in which she acted as chair of the Scholarship Committee(1974-77), the State Convention Evaluation Committee (1977-78), and the Legislative Committee; life membership in the American Vocational Association, in which she served as state delegate to the conventions in 1977 and 1979 and as hostess of the home economics section (1977); and life membership in the National Education Association and the Florida Teaching Profession, in which she was the elected delegate to the conventions of 1959, 1961, and 1962. She was also a member of the Southeast District Home Economics Association (Florida) in which she served as treasurer (1964), president (1965), chair of the Nominating Committee (1967) and was on the Advisory Board (1964-67). Dr. McCall was the elected delegate to the National Convention (1976) and the representative to the National Public Policy Workshop (1977). She was treasurer (1976-77) and chair of the Public Relations Committee (1978-79) of the TAM District Home Economics Association. In 1982, she was elected president of the North Carolina Council of Vocational Teacher Educators. Dr. McCall retired from Appalachian State University in June 1994.
