Biographical Text
Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences Wade Macey (January 13, 1936-) was born near Mount Airy, North Carolina. He was the second of five children born to Elizabeth Marsh (1903-1994) and Thomas Henry Macey (1893-1964). Macey attended all twelve years of public school at Franklin School near Mount Airy, and graduated in 1954. He graduated from Guilford College, Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1960 with a B.S. degree in mathematics. He earned his M.S. degree (1962) and his Ph.D. degree (1970) in mathematics from Florida State University, Tallahassee. Macey married Barbara Hull, a registered nurse, in 1958, and they have three children. Sharon, earned her bachelor's degree in special education from Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer, North Carolina, in 1980 and is employed by the State of North Carolina. She is married to Jeff Balfrey and they have two children, Meghan and Nathan. They reside in Misenheimer, North Carolina. Another daughter, Kimberly, earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Pfeiffer University in 1982 and a M.B.A. degree from Duke University in 1984. She is married to Dr. Judson Handley, an orthopedic surgeon. They live in Franklin, North Carolina, where Dr. Handley has his medical practice. A son, Tom, earned his bachelor's degree in data processing systems from Appalachian State University in 1986 and is employed by Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem. Tom is married to the former Beth Talbert and they have two children, Kyle (born 1992) and Will (born 1993). They live in Advance, North Carolina. Dr. Macey was on the mathematics faculty at the Oxford College of Emory University, Oxford, Georgia, from 1962 tol965. He joined the mathematics faculty of Pfeiffer University in 1967, and served as chair of the Department of Mathematics from 1971 until 1982. Macey accepted a position on the mathematics faculty at Appalachian State University in 1982 and taught here until his retirement in 1997. During his years at Appalachian State University, Macey served on several committees within the Department of Mathematical Scences and on some university committees. He was professionally affiliated with the Southeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America and the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Some of the papers presented by Macey at annual meetings are listed below: • "Some Interesting Dense Subset of R" • "What are the Accumulation Points of the Set T(n), Where T is a Trigonometric Function and n is a Positive Integer • "Some Bounds for the Zeros of Polynomial Functions" • "Bounds and Other Results for the Zeros of Polynomial Functions" • "An Interval Containing All the Roots of a Given Polynomial Equation" • "An n-dimensional Version of the Mean-Value Theorem" • "Some Ideas for your Calculus Class" Over the years, Macey taught most of the undergraduate and several of the senior-graduate classes at Appalachian State. His favorite courses were calculus, differential equations and analysis courses. Through self-study since retirement, Dr. Macey has taught himself electrical wiring, plumbing, and some carpentry skills. He does extensive landscaping at his new home in Mount Airy, where his family also includes three dogs and two cats. Dr. Macey also enjoys playing the banjo with several of his long-time bluegrass-picking friends. He states that "retirement is wonderful."
