Professor Emerita of Foreign Languages and Literatures Helen Elizabeth Latour (February 26, 1925-) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1949, she received her B.A. degree in English from Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts. Latour earned her M.A. degree in English from Boston College in Chestnut, Massachusetts, in 1956, having done her course work during the summers from 1950 to 1956. She completed her Ph.D. degree in comparative literature from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1972. Dr. Latour did additional academic work at Boston College; at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut; and at Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, North Carolina. Dr. Latour joined the Appalachian State University faculty in 1971 as a part-time Latin professor. Before coming to Boone, her teaching experience included six years at Jeanne d'Arc Academy in Milton, Massachusetts; three summers and one academic year at Lafosse Teacher Training School also in Milton; eight years at Marycliff Academy in Winchester, Massachusetts; and five years at St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines in Asheville, North Carolina. Dr. Latour's professional affiliations include the Southern Regional Honors Council, the National Collegiate Honors Council, the Southern Comparative Literature Association, and the National Classical League. She served as a General College advisor for the Department of Foreign Languages and directed the General Honors Program. Latour's research has been in the exegesis of the Canticles.
