Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction Joseph Pat Knight attended New Mexico State University in Las Crucis, New Mexico, where he received his B.S. degree in accounting/business administration in 1963 and his M.A. degree in elementary education in 1968. In 1972, Knight received his Ed.D. degree from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, with a major in curriculum and instruction Knight began his professional career in 1961 at Carlsbad Senior High School, Carlsbad, New Mexico, as a health and physical education instructor. From 1964 to 1966, he was an instructor at Newman Elementary School in El Paso, Texas. He taught at Madison Elementary School in El Paso from 1966 to 1968, and from 1968 to 1969, he taught at Emerson Elementary School in Midland, Texas. Knight was then a teacher at Smith Elementary School and Park Elementary School in Greeley, Colorado, from 1969 to 1971. In 1972, Dr. Knight came to Appalachian State University. His first position at Appalachian State was coordinator and instructor in the Departmental Graduate Intern Program. From 1972 to 1976, he was an assistant professor of elementary education; from 1973 to 1974, he was acting chair in the Department of Education; from 1974 to 1975, he was a visiting professor at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He served as Program Development Specialist and Associate Director of Appalachian State University-Ashe County and Teacher Corps, 1976-1978; also from 1976 to 1978, he was an associate professor of childhood education; from 1993 to 1996, he was director of Extension Instruction; from 1978 to 1990 and from 1995 to 1996, he was assistant dean and director of Field Experiences in the Reich College of Education; from 1973 to 2006, he was a member of the Graduate Faculty; from 1978 to 2006, he was a professor of curriculum and instruction; and from 1996 to 2006, he was coordinator of the Undergraduate and Graduate Elementary Education Program (K-6). Some of the professional meetings attended by Dr. Knight include Kappa Delta Pi, Birmingham, Alabama, fall 1995; Association of Teacher Educators, St. Louis, Missouri, spring 1996; American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, Chicago, Illinois, spring 1996; Annual International Conference on Post-Compulsory Education and Training, Queensland, Australia, December 1996; Educational Forum, Raleigh, North Carolina, fall 1996; Region 7 North Carolina Middle School Association, Asheville, North Carolina, November 1997; Kappa Delta Pi, St. Louis, Missouri, November 1987; Association of Teacher Educators, Dallas, Texas, February 1998, International Alliance of Teaching Scholars, Atlanta, Georgia, July 1998; North Carolina Association of Teacher Educators, Elon College, North Carolina, October, 1998; National Middle School Association Annual Conference, Denver, Colorado, November 1998; North Carolina Teacher Education Forum, Raleigh, October 1, 1999; North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, October 27, 2000; and National Middle School Association, St. Louis, Missouri, November 2-5, 2000. Off-campus scholarly assignments performed by Knight were director of University Extension Programs and professor of extension courses, 1995-1996; teaching extension courses at R.S. Middle School in Rutherford County, North Carolina, 1996-1997; teaching extension courses at Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina, 1997-1998. Dr. Knight also taught extension courses at Winston-Salem State University/East Burke Middle and at Isothermal Community College, 1998-1999, and was coordinator of the Isothermal Community College Elementary Education Bachelor of Science Program (K-6), spring 1999. Leadership roles held by Dr. Knight include Field Advisory Council (chair), Reich College of Education (1995-1996); North Carolina Adult Education Association (NCAEA) Board of Directors (1995-1996); North Carolina Association of Teacher Education Board of Directors (1995-1996) ; Association of Teacher Education in North Carolina (ATENC) Board of Directors and secretary of association (1996-1997); North Carolina Middle School Association, Advisory Board of Directors, Region 7 (1996-1997); Appalachian State University/Public School Partnership of Coordinating Council (1996-1997); ATENC Board of Directors and secretary of association (1997-1998); Initial Licensure Committee, State Department of Public Instruction (1998-1999); NCAEA Board of Directors (1998-1999); ATENC Board of Directors (1998-1999); North Carolina Middle School Association Region 7 Board of Directors (1998-1999); Coordinator of off-campus Middle Level Graduate Program, Winston-Salem State University (1999-2000); Coordinator of off-campus Bachelor of Science Program in Elementary Education, Cleveland Community College, Mayland Community College, Isothermal Community College (1999-2000); Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Visitation Team (chair) Wilson Middle School (1999-2000); Association of Continuing Higher Education Research Committee (2000-2001); NCAEA Board of Directors (2000-2001); and North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction, chair, Accrediting Visitation Team, University of North Carolina at Charlotte (all education programs) (2000-2001). Honors received by Knight include NCAEA 1996-1997 Association Service Award; Reich College of Education, Outstanding Mentor Award, May 1996; Reich College of Education, Outstanding Service Award, 1997-1998; honored by Appalachian State University's Women's Basketball Team as Outstanding Professor, 1998-1999; Service Award by Region 7 of North Carolina Middle School Association, 1999-2000; and nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award, 2000-2001.
