Biographical Text

Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction Robert S. (Bob) Jones (October 29, 1931-), was born in Wake County, North Carolina. He spent his early years in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated from Savannah High School (1949), following a family move to Georgia. Jones received an A.A. degree from Armstrong Junior College (Savannah, Georgia) in 1951 and a B.A. degree from Wake Forest College (North Carolina) in 1955. He continued graduate study at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Boston College (Massachusetts), and Columbia University (New York). Jones taught in the Sumter, South Carolina, public schools from 1960 tol968. He completed his M.Ed. (1969) and Ph.D. (1971) degrees at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. In 1971, Dr. Jones joined the Appalachian State University faculty as an associate professor in the Department of Childhood Education. During his career at Appalachian State, he helped promote study abroad through a six-weeks' study-and-work experience in English schools in the United Kingdom. At this time, he arranged for Appalachian State's first student-teaching assignment abroad. Jerry Byers from Statesville, North Carolina, completed his student teaching assignment in Nottingham, England, in the fall of 1973. In addition to his teaching and advising responsibilities, Dr. Jones served as chair of the 1974 Appalachian State Self-Study Committee for membership in the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and he also served as president of the North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children (1978-80). Dr. Jones was tenured full professor and a member of the graduate faculty from 1977 until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Jones now resides in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, with his wife, Anne Buxton Jones. His son, Byron, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, with graduate degrees from the University of Massachusetts and the University of Maryland, and is now pursuing a career in music. A student under mural artist James McLean; a teacher of art in public schools; and an exhibiter, over the years, of his own works, Jones continues to enjoy painting and woodcarving in his retirement.
