Professor Emeritus of Leadership and Higher Education Ralph Goodman Hall (April 27, 1939- ) was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He is married to Francie E. Hall and they have four children: Richard Craig, Jennifer Anne, Jonathan Goodman, and Catherine Elizabeth. Hall received his B.S. degree with a major in zoology and a minor in psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1963. From 1963-1964, Hall taught biology and Latin at the Memphis University School for Boys in Tennessee. He received his M.A. degree in Curriculum and Instruction (collateral work in biology) with a minor in Educational Administration from the University of Memphis, Memphis in 1965. From 1966-1968, Hall taught general science, biology, mathematics, and enrichment chemistry at Howell Watkins Junior High School in West Palm Beach , Florida. In 1966, Hall accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Florida. In this role, he taught general biology courses for terminal and university parallel students as well as human anatomy and physiology in the nursing program. He also served on the admissions committee for the nursing program. Hall began working as a Graduate Administrative Assistant at the University of Tennessee in 1968, while he continued his education. From 1969 to 1970, Hall continued to work for the university as an Instructor and Assistant Director of Highway Emergency Medical Services; Phase II, Bureau of Educational Research and Service, College of Education. He received is Ed.D. degree in Educational Administration from the University of Tennessee in 1970. In 1970, Hall accepted the position of Dean of Student Services at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee. In this role, he planned, developed, and administered a comprehensive college student personnel program. He also administered the college public information program that involved working with the area newspapers, chambers of commerce, civic clubs, churches, and other organizations. During this time, Hall continued his post-doctoral studies at the University of Tennessee and Boston University in the areas of human relations training and organizational and leadership development. Hall began in career at Appalachian State University in 1974 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Administration, Supervision, and Higher Education. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in higher education, specifically community college courses in organization and administration, and instructional methodology. He was appointed a member of the Graduate Faculty in 1975. In 1978, Hall was promoted to full professor and chairperson in the Department of Administration, Supervision and Higher Education. He provided leadership for sixteen graduate faculty members involved in the Master of Arts and Educational Specialist Programs for public school administrators, community/junior college educators, and community college educators. In 1986, Hall received his J.D. degree from Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem. From 1987-2008, in addition to working at Appalachian State University, he had a private law practice. During his time at Appalachian, Hall also taught courses in public school law, law of higher education, leadership theory, and sport law. While teaching at ASU he also has served as a Case Manager for the North Carolina State Board of Public Instruction (1997 - 2009), a Hearing Review Officer for the Division of Exceptional Children for the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction, and School Law Reporter for the Educational Law Association. Hall's professional affiliations included the Education Law Association, the North Carolina Bar Association - Educational Law Section, National Association of College & University Attorneys, and the Society of the Study of Legal Aspects of Sport & Physical Activity. Hall held numerous committee memberships including the Departmental Personnel Committee, the International Studies Council, the Teacher Education Council, the Council of Chairs, the Graduate Council, the College of Education Evaluation Committee, Chair of the RCOE Dean Search Committee, and the RCOE Technology Committee. He also received many awards and honors including the Board of Trustees Study Abroad Grant (1978), awarded leave for scholarly activities (1982-1983), Pro Bono Attorney of the Year, 24th Judicial District (1995), awarded leave for scholarly activities (2002-2003), the NC Board of Governors' Excellence in Teaching Award (2005), and the NC Adult Educator of the Year Award (2006).
