Biographical Text
Professor Emerita of Economics Patricia Gaynor received her B.S. degree in mathematics in 1959 from Stetson University, Deland, Florida. After earning her master's degree in mathematics (1967) from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, she received her Ph.D. degree in research and statistics (1973) from the same university. Gaynor began her teaching career in the Dade and Broward County public school system, where she taught mathematics and served as a department chairperson (1961-1971). She had a teaching assistantship at the University of Miami, Miami, Florida, from 1972 until 1973. Dr. Gaynor joined the faculty of Appalachian State University in 1973 as assistant director of the computer center in charge of faculty research and computing. She became an associate professor of economics in 1979 and a full professor in 1984. Gaynor retired in January 2002 but continued working as a part-time faculty member in the economics department until December 2003. In addition to her teaching, Gaynor was an active member of the academic community and has served as a consultant to local government and community organizations. Gaynor was a member of the American Statistical Association and of the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economic Profession. In 1996, she received the Appalachian College of Business Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Gaynor has published a long list of writings and has co-authored a major textbook and instructor's manual for use in economic forecasting classes.
