Professor Emeritus of Psychology Boyd Max Dowell (July 31, 1934-) was born in Shouns, Tennessee. He is married to Shirley Stanfill and the couple has two children: Teresa Marie (October 21, 1959-) and Timothy Max (April 4, 1963-). Dowell received his B.S. degree in secondary education from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1957. He then attended the University of Tennessee, earning an M.S. degree in education administration and supervision (1958) and an Ed.D. degree in educational psychology and guidance (1967). Dr. Dowell was a teacher in the Ohio schools for four years before becoming an assistant professor of psychology at Cedarville College, Cedarville, Ohio. He held this position for five years, joining the faculty at Appalachian State University in l967 as an associate professor in the Department of Psychology. He was promoted to professor in l970. In addition to his academic obligations, Dr. Dowell served as consultant for the Charlotte, North Carolina Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and as school psychologist in the Catawba County public schools. During his tenure at Appalachian State, Dowell served as secretary and vice chair of the graduate faculty, as chair of the Department of Psychology's junior college program, and as president of the university chapter of the American Association of University Professors. He also served on the Graduate Council, the Athletics Council, the President's Advisory Council, the Education-Psychology Advisory Board, the Faculty Senate (chair), the University Fringe Benefits Committee, and his department's Applied Programs Committee. In 1976, he was selected to participate in the university's administrative internship program. His professional affiliations included the American Psychological Association, the North Carolina Psychological Association (fellow), the Southeastern Psychological Association, the National Educational Association, the North Carolina Educational Association, the North Carolina School Psychological Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. Dr. Dowell retired from the university in 1999 and was awarded emeritus status by the Board of Trustees. Since his retirement, Dr. Dowell has spent his time serving as an elder in his church, and as a member, and chairman for three years, of the Appalachian Christian School Board. He is also enjoying having time to read and study, and in his words has become a "small-time" traveler and a "small-time" entrepreneur.
