Biographical Text
Assistant Professor Emerita of Chemistry Gelene Andrews Atwood (October 3, 1930-) was born in Alleghany County near Sparta, North Carolina, to Jennie Reeves and Lee A. Andrews. She is married to Boyden O. Atwood, and the couple has five children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Gelene Atwood earned a B.A. degree in chemistry from the Woman's College of University of North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) in 1953. In 1967, she earned an M.A. degree in chemistry from Appalachian. In 1956, Atwood came to Appalachian State Teacher's College (now Appalachian State University) as a chemistry laboratory instructor for Professor A.R. Smith. Although she taught only labs the first year, she taught one lecture section of general chemistry the following year. Since then, Atwood taught various courses, including general chemistry, physical science, chemistry for non-majors, and an applied science course for home economics majors. Atwood is active in the Rutherwood Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School teacher of adult women and leader of the Baptist Women's Group. She has been a volunteer at the Watauga Nursing Center for several years and serves on the Watauga County Nursing Home Committee. Her hobbies include gardening, reading, and traveling.
