She received her M.A. degree in English from Appalachian State that same year. In 1984, Antone was promoted to the position of head of Reference Service and she became an associate professor in 1989. During her academic career, one of her acaccomplishments was serving as the coordinator of the MARS (Machine Assisted Reference Services) Program, and she greatly improved its organizational structure. In 1987, Antone chaired the American Library Association's discussion group on performance standards for reference/information librarians and was appointed to the North Carolina Library Association's Publications Committee.
