Associate Professor Emeritus of Management James Winslow Hathaway (February 4, 1916 - ), retired college professor, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is married to Mary M. Hathaway, and they have seven children: Kathy (July 29,1944), Susan (June 11,1946), Anne (September 13,1948), Debbie (June 18, 1950), Jimmy (September 3, 1953), Tom (August 21, 1956), and John (July 3, 1965). Hathaway attended Dartmouth College from 1933 until 1937 and earned an A.B. degree in economics and political science. He later earned a M.A. degree in industrial relations from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he pursued doctoral study at the University of Pennsylvania. Before coming to Appalachian, Hathaway served as an instructor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania from 1949 to 1951. He also worked for several major corporations in the area of personnel management. This included a long, productive and professionally satisfying stint as compensation director at Allstate Insurance Company from 1955 to 1971. In the fall of 1971, Hathaway came to Appalachian State University as an assistant professor in the college of business. He taught undergraduate classes in investments, personnel administration, compensation, and human relations, and both undergraduate and graduate classes in labor relations, personnel management, and the social responsibilities of management. Hathaway's areas of major interest were the social responsibility of business and the future environment of business. Hathaway is the author of numerous publications, including the following: "Business Environment Demands Modern Problem-Solving," The National Underwriter, April 9, 1976. "Business Donations that Don't Help Business," Business and Society Review, Fall 1981. "Are MBA's More Than Quantitative Robots?" Business and Society Review, 1982. "Is Economic Theory Hogwash?" Business and Society Review, 1983. "Will Society Respect Work?" The National Underwriter, August, 1983. Hathaway retired from Appalachian in 1986 and was appointed to the rank of associate professor emeritus by action of the Board of Trustees on June 6,1987.
