The Daylight Is Gone
Come, dearest, the daylight is gone,
And the stars are unvailing to thee,
Come, wander my loved one, alone,
If alone thou canst call it with me.
Let us go where the wild flowers bloom,
Amid the soft dews of the night,
Where the orange dispells its perfume,
And the rose speaks of love and of life.
Come, dearest, I must so soon leave thee,
To wander mid strangers alone,
When at eve thy sweet smiles can not greet me,
Nor thy gentle voice at morn.
But, Oh, ‘twill be sweet to remember,
Although I am far, far from thee,
That the hand of faith can’t sever,
My lasting affections for thee.
